Improving STEM Literacy through Solar Energy-Based Robotics Training for Elementary School Students at SDIT Fithrah Insani 3, Bandung Regency

Abstract

The rapid advancement of science and technology requires elementary school students to develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) literacy from an early age. However, implementing STEM-based learning in elementary schools remains challenging due to limited teacher competencies, inadequate learning media, and insufficient experience in educational robotics. SDIT Fithrah Insani 3, Bandung Regency, intends to develop robotics learning activities but requires academic assistance from higher education institutions. This community service program aimed to improve students' STEM literacy through hands-on science, technology, and robotics training. The implementation consisted of needs assessment, program planning, interactive lectures, solar-powered robot assembly practice, mentoring, and activity evaluation. The program involved 30 fifth-grade students with lecturers and undergraduate students from Telkom University, serving as instructors and facilitators. The results indicated improved student understanding of STEM concepts, robotic components, and solar energy conversion into electrical and mechanical energy. Participants successfully assembled and tested simple solar-powered robots while demonstrating strong collaboration, enthusiasm, and active participation throughout the activities. Furthermore, the program strengthened the school's capacity to implement STEM-based learning through collaboration with the university. This community service initiative is expected to serve as a sustainable model for strengthening technology literacy and innovative STEM education at the elementary school level.
